Windows Defender says WP PDF VCL components have virus

  • Having upgraded to WPTools7, I also downloaded and installed the latest version of WPDF3 Plus.

I now find that if I create a new blank project with a single form, and drop any of the 3 components from the WPDF palette onto the form, and compile it, Windows 8 immediately denies access to the .exe because "the file contains a virus or potentially unwanted software".

If I delete the component and recompile, all is fine.

Neither wPDF nor WPTools contains any code which accesses the Internet. There is also just standard code which uses the registry so I do not have any explanation why you see that message. I also haven't heard of it before.

There was a false positive with one of the Demos a while ago - but usually that clears up after a while. Unfortunatly some viruse are written in Delphi. Because of false positives we do not use execryptor anymore.

To make sure there is nothing wrong, You can upload Your EXE to http://www.virustotal.com and send me (Support@wptools.de) the result. If all is ok, You should send your EXE to the Windows Defender Team so they can update their database. I did this before with Avira and they fixed the problem within a day

I just scanned the wPDF DLL at Virustotal

    all green

  • Thanks, I uploaded the project to virustotal.com, and the only engine that detected malware was Windows Defender.

I've sent a sample to MS and asked them to fix the problem.

I've also replaced Windows Defender with Webroot SecureAnywhere, and no longer have a problem.

This is WPDF Plus which I believe doesn't use the DLL

Just to be clear - this was just a form with the components dropped on it. No attempt was made to actually use them!
